Jeremy, approximately 4-5 years old, was vacationing in Florida with his family when he nearly drowned in a hotel pool. His father was sitting on the patio with another person while Jeremy wanted to swim in the pool where the water was over his head even in the shallow end. His father instructed him to stay on the steps and hold onto the handrail. Being a curious child who liked to test boundaries, Jeremy swung on the rail until it slipped through his wet fingers, plunging him underwater where waves repeatedly drove him to the bottom.
As Jeremy held his breath underwater following his father's earlier safety instructions, time began to slow down dramatically. Everything seemed to creep along as if coming to a halt. Suddenly it became dark, and Jeremy found himself about twenty feet in the air looking down at the scene below. From this elevated perspective, he could see his own body submerged in the water, his father and the other person sitting on the nearby patio, and the entire pool area. This out-of-body state felt perfectly normal to him. He was aware his mother was nearby but unaware of what was happening. He experienced overwhelming peace and serenity, with a complete absence of worry, fear, or anxiety. The view had a milky, misty quality with enhanced awareness - he could see everything at once with a broader perspective than normal vision. From his elevated viewpoint, Jeremy witnessed his father suddenly get up and run to the pool edge. Though he could observe these events, he had no real awareness of time passing. The rescue seemed predetermined or planned, though not in the sense of prior human planning. He watched as his father jumped into the pool and rescued him. The experience included feelings of love and compassion for himself as he viewed his body from above, without any fear despite the life-threatening situation. When Jeremy returned to his body and stood at the pool's edge with his father, he retained vivid memories of the experience. As an adult who became a minister, he reflects that the peace he experienced was unlike anything before or since. The experience strengthened his existing faith, confirming his belief in God's presence and the reality of consciousness beyond the physical body. The clarity of this memory from age 4-5 stands out compared to his other vague childhood memories.
