Jaime was experiencing irregular heartbeats that resulted in her heart stopping during the summer of 1978. When her heart stopped, she fainted and fell, striking her head on a cement walkway. The combination of cardiac arrest and head trauma created a life-threatening situation that led to her near-death experience.
While unconscious from the fall and cardiac arrest, Jaime found herself in a unique state that was both dark yet not dark. There was no tunnel or bright light typically reported in NDEs. Instead, she became aware of female voices having a discussion about her fate. These voices were asking whether it was time to take her, as if deliberating about whether she should cross over permanently. She lay in complete comfort and peace while waiting for their answer, feeling no distress despite the serious nature of what was being discussed. The auditory perception was remarkably clear - Jaime could hear the voices distinctly even though they were whispering. She felt very alert and aware of what was happening, with her consciousness seeming more acute than normal. The beings she heard appeared to be waiting for an answer from a higher authority about whether it was her time to die. When Jaime regained consciousness, she experienced a grand mal seizure, indicating the severity of her medical condition. She felt very disappointed to be back in her body, not wanting to return from the peaceful state she had experienced. The experience profoundly affected her beliefs, convincing her that angels were present during her crisis and that death is not the end but rather a return home. She did not share this experience for about ten years, fearing people would think her crazy.
