Sheila, an ICU registered nurse, underwent surgery during which her aorta was lacerated. Her blood pressure dropped to 40/14 in recovery. She heard the surgeon ordering a CT scan and a nurse saying it would kill her. A central line was placed and she heard someone say "I don't have a pulse." She moved her arm to indicate consciousness and avoid CPR. She floated above her body briefly, seeing the anesthesiologist rushing and calling for a surgeon, then her vision disappeared. She floated through soft clouds feeling no pain or gravity. Her deceased sister escorted her, reminding her that her children needed her and it wasn't her time. She saw her deceased grandparents and remarkably, a former patient whose hand she had held as he died. This patient told her she had more to do and must return to continue touching lives as she had for him. Reentering her body felt like falling from a high building onto concrete. The surgeon, who was also a friend, later said he wouldn't have continued past 20 minutes for anyone else. She received 60 units of blood. The experience left her with psychic abilities and reduced fear of death.
