Shabs experienced multiple NDEs throughout childhood related to fainting episodes triggered by pain or medical procedures. She had always been fearful of injections and medical tools. During one hospital visit for high fever, after receiving an injection, she immediately felt herself passing through a black, hollow tube at tremendous speed without feeling her body. The experience was frightening with thick darkness. She regained consciousness to find her mother and doctor at her bedside. Another incident occurred when removing a bandaid from a bleeding knee caused severe pain and fainting. She experienced the same hollow, dark tunnel. Her mother reported her body shook as if having epilepsy. These experiences occurred multiple times until age 20. During the tunnel experiences, she felt no body, moved at light speed, and experienced time distortion. She was terrified throughout and feared the experiences would recur. Her 9-year-old nephew later reported a similar tunnel experience when fainting, though he saw light at the tunnel's end which Shabs never experienced.
