Gloria S experienced a near-death event in 1975 during a severe vehicle accident where the truck she was driving rolled over. According to witnesses, she was ejected through the windshield and found with her head buried in sand, not breathing. Her ex-husband had to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to revive her. She has no memory of these traumatic physical events but retains a vivid recollection of her out-of-body experience during the incident.
During the experience, Gloria found herself floating above her body, looking directly down at herself lying face-up with her three children leaning over her head area. From this elevated perspective, she could observe specific details about what everyone was wearing, including her own clothing. She experienced a complete absence of pain while floating, in stark contrast to the excruciating pain she felt upon awakening in the medical center. The floating sensation was peaceful and without distress. The most significant veridical aspect was her ability to accurately describe the positioning of her body and her children from an impossible vantage point above the scene. She saw herself face-up with her children gathered around her head area, observing clothing and positioning details that she later verified. Her past also flashed before her during the experience, though she provides limited detail about this life review component. Gloria awakened in severe pain at a medical center with no memory of how she arrived there. The experience left her with the conviction that there is no pain in death, fundamentally changing her beliefs about the dying process. Despite the traumatic nature of the accident, her out-of-body experience was neither pleasant nor distressing, but rather neutral and observational.
