In 1971 or 1972, Susanna attempted suicide following a traumatic rape by two men that she couldn't tell anyone about. Using stolen medications sufficient to "put 30 people to sleep," she overdosed around midnight. She felt blocks of ice moving up her body, starting at her legs. When the cold reached her chest, her bed seemed to open up and she slid down through a tunnel. She realized she was traveling through space at high speed based on star movement. She passed over an orange/red glow and thought if Christians were right, she was going to hell, but found the universe was peaceful with no place for fear. She doesn't recall arriving anywhere or speaking to anyone, but her thoughts had a voice. The next evening she found herself against the kitchen door with a severe headache, angry to be back on earth. An inner voice declared "Suicide is no longer an option for you." Having previously embraced existentialism and Nietzsche's philosophy that suicide was always an option for escaping misery, this message transformed her perspective. She now chooses life daily despite difficult times.
