Rachel experienced an internal hemorrhage from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy in 1987. She was in terrible pain for two days before going to the doctor's surgery. While waiting with her mother, she told her mother "I love you" for the first time, sensing something serious was happening.
The pain suddenly stopped completely and Rachel found herself above her body, looking down at herself and her mother. She could see a kidney-shaped medical tray with scissors on top of a wall cupboard - a detail she would later verify. She felt no body or sense of physical form, just consciousness at a decision-making crossroads. She thought about her husband of only two months and decided she couldn't die because he needed her. Rachel saw no tunnel, lights, or beings, but felt she was in a blank white space of nothingness. She experienced incredible peace and felt she had control over whether to stay or return. She made a conscious decision to return to life. She was then in an ambulance with acute pain again. She had lost 7 pints of blood and her veins had collapsed. Emergency surgery saved her life. Later, she asked her mother about the kidney dish on the cabinet, confirming it was really there.
