At age 7, Dixie was taking swimming lessons in Lake Michigan when she swam too far out during the final lesson. The instructor had told them to swim out as far as they could, then return. When she stopped to turn around, she sank in the deep, dark water and her lungs filled. She kept sinking in the darkness until suddenly she was enveloped in a warm, loving golden light that felt like caring arms around her. The light filled the entire dark lake and surrounded her with utter joy, incredible peace, and unity with the world. She felt the light was a loving being, later believing it was Jesus whom she had seen as a child despite her atheist father's objections. She awoke with the lifeguard performing resuscitation, who begged her not to tell her mother. The experience helped her endure childhood abuse and gave her lasting psychic abilities. She never feared death afterward and felt meant to be alive. The profound love she experienced was unlike anything in her difficult family life.
