Pearler was hit head-on by a drunk driver while riding his motorcycle on January 23, 1982. He experienced clinical death with cessation of breathing and heart function. During the experience, he traveled faster than light with light behind him and darkness ahead. He saw a dot of light that became a doorway where Jesus appeared as light. Jesus communicated telepathically expressing sorrow for his suffering and said he had not done what he promised to do and must go back. Pearler begged to stay but was told he would return eventually but not yet. He heard "We got him, he's awake" and returned to intensive care. After recovery he became a chaplain with healing abilities but was asked to leave most churches. When asked to be a deacon, he agreed only if they would turn the locks around on the doors. He reports being able to heal people and animals, sometimes without their knowledge.
