Norman had Hypertropic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy and underwent an Alcohol Septal Ablation procedure. While adjusting his position in the ICU bed, the temporary pacing lead became dislodged causing his heart to stop. A Code Blue was called and after eight attempts at cardioversion, his heart restarted. During the cardiac arrest, Norman found himself in a wide hallway with people moving toward a bright room. He was surrounded by loving beings who reassured him. A supervisory figure told him he was not expected yet and could choose to stay or return. He thought of his children, particularly his youngest daughter preparing for college. He was sent back against his will. Norman developed serious complications including septicemia, pneumonia, and kidney failure, requiring two weeks in an induced coma. The experience left him certain that death is just a transition and more opposed to religious interpretations of such experiences.
