Carlos Manuel suffered a stroke on September 13, 2009, while in Costa Rica with family. It began with loss of balance and right-side paralysis. In the ambulance, he signaled to his wife that if he died, it must be serious. As he lost consciousness, he felt strange peace and could sense the palm trees moving by the roadside with incredible serenity. The stroke was caused by left carotid artery thrombosis, threatening his life and inducing a week-long coma.
During the coma, he felt gently pulled from his body and far from Earth. The universe expanded infinitely with light, while Earth became a tiny point, giving him perspective on humanity's simultaneous greatness and insignificance. He entered a place full of light with many souls present as light beings, experiencing extraordinary peace and happiness. There was a border like a great open door that he knew meant no return if crossed. His deceased father-in-law approached him through direct mental communication, saying "Carlos, it is not yet time." Despite Carlos wanting to stay in this beautiful place, his father-in-law insisted he return, mentioning a mission. His cousin Mario was also present. The father-in-law had been dead two years at this time. Time seemed non-linear, with everything happening simultaneously rather than chronologically. Upon waking in the hospital, Carlos was confused and couldn't recognize anyone, speak, or move his right side. The cerebral ischemia caused permanent damage including hemiplegia, dyslexia, and speech difficulties. His experience dramatically increased his spirituality and faith in God, giving him certainty about life after death and making him more compassionate toward others with disabilities.
