Myriam M was 7 months pregnant with twins when diagnosed with severe preeclampsia. Two days after hospitalization, she underwent emergency cesarean section at 32 weeks. Due to a fibroid, she experienced massive hemorrhage requiring transfusion of 6 units of red cells and 6 units of plasma plus 2000ml of fluids. She heard her first baby cry and felt it placed on her arm, but couldn't look at the second due to pain from the IV. She heard the medical team panic about bleeding and calling for backup surgical and reanimation teams. After losing consciousness, she felt her body sliding toward an intense light unlike anything she'd seen before - white with all rainbow colors simultaneously, a beneficial light. She slid toward a source of intense happiness and love beyond anything previously experienced. She felt weightless, floating, free of pain, and deeply happy. She felt she deserved this wonderful place and wanted to let go completely. Then she thought of her husband and two babies, seeing them as silhouettes, and realized she would leave them orphaned and widowed. She decided to return, struggling and tearing herself away with immense effort and pain, screaming as she woke. She found herself in a heating plastic wrap in the surgical unit, feeling completely emptied. She spent 48 hours in recovery with high blood pressure and neurological irritability. She felt between two worlds until reunited with her babies. The experience may have contributed to subsequent maternal exhaustion and postpartum depression.
