At age 10 in June 1971, Beth was hospitalized with a mysterious illness that began at her birthday party. She developed severe breathing problems and extremely high fever, remaining unconscious for most of a week while doctors conducted numerous tests without finding a cause. The hospital warned her parents she could die. During a prayer where she told God she was ready to die, she experienced severe chest pain followed by wonderful relief and golden light. In her hospital room, a bright light appeared in the corner of the ceiling and grew larger, revealing a man in a brown robe with a beard floating in the air - whom she later identified as Jesus. They communicated telepathically. When asked if she was ready to die, she replied she was just a little girl who hadn't lived yet. He then asked "What have you done with your life?" - a question that would guide her entire future. She believes he showed her things she could do if she returned, though she cannot remember specifics. The vision ended with the man receding as the light grew smaller. She awakened standing in her bed, called her mother, and when nurses arrived to investigate the "intruder," they froze upon hearing her account. The next morning, tests finally revealed severe pneumonia that had been invisible before. Her recovery took three months. The experience eliminated her previous terror of darkness and insects. Religious personnel including priests, ministers and nuns came to interview her about the encounter.
