Barbara experienced a near-death experience during a diabetic ketoacidosis emergency in 1983. She was brought to the emergency room by her father while incoherent from extremely high blood sugar and an infection from a foot blister. While doctors worked to revive her, she found herself hovering above her body, observing her crying father praying and holding her hand, her mother sitting in a chair, and the medical staff working on her. She saw a beautiful bright light and was surrounded by a cloud-like presence. From this elevated perspective, she witnessed the entire scene below with remarkable clarity. She then encountered a bright light and a figure she believed to be Jesus, appearing with long hair in the typical depiction. The experience was characterized by an overwhelming sense of peace and the absence of fear. She described feeling like a cloud returning to the table and taking a breath as she came back to her body. Upon awakening the next morning, she noticed the grass outside appeared an impossibly vivid green, unlike any earthly color she had ever seen. Throughout the experience, she felt incredible peace, joy, and love that was stronger than even her parents' love. The medical staff later confirmed they thought they had "lost" her during the emergency, validating the life-threatening nature of the event.
