Michelle was swimming in the Missouri River with her two older sisters when she was pulled under by a strong undercurrent. Unable to see or reach the surface, she began drowning. During this time, she experienced passing through a tunnel with a feeling of being drawn toward something greater than life itself. She encountered an unearthly light that seemed to have no beginning or end - it was warm, inviting, loving, all-knowing and complete. She felt pure unadulterated love, completeness, incredible peace and joy, and a sense of unity with the universe. The experience was characterized by a deafening silence after the initial sound of rushing water. She felt no sense of time during the experience. Her sister eventually found her and pulled her out by her hair, which she experienced as being suddenly separated from complete love. After being rescued, she coughed up water while her sisters laughed, leaving her confused and angry about being pulled from that perfect state of love. She never re-entered the water that day. The experience profoundly changed her spiritual perspective, leading her to understand that God is love and exists within everyone and everything.
