At age 15, Mary attempted suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills after enduring abuse from her alcoholic father with PTSD. She was taken to the hospital and spent three days in the ICU. During emergency treatment, she had an out-of-body experience floating above her hospital bed. She saw a tunnel and light, hearing a non-auditory voice telling her to choose between life or going to the light. The light was comforting, full of unconditional love and peace - the first time she felt truly loved and valued as a person. She observed the nurses working on her, heard them discussing ICU (understanding the term despite never hearing it before), and saw her father leave the room and return drunk, being denied entry. She made the conscious choice to return to life. After the experience, she spent over a month in psychiatric care. The NDE transformed her self-perception from feeling worthless to recognizing her value as a human being. She went on to earn a Master's degree, build three successful companies, and maintain a 38-year marriage. The experience eliminated her fear of death and gave her a sense of connection to something greater than herself.
