Mario contracted plasmodium falciparum malaria in Africa but was initially misdiagnosed. After returning home, his wife found him unconscious with cardiac arrest. The emergency doctor diagnosed his heart had stopped and administered an injection to his sternum. He was transported to the hospital where he spent several days in a coma. During this time, Mario experienced being enveloped in an indescribable wonderful light filled with love and peace. He found himself in a place of joy with huge, wonderful flowers and intoxicating perfumes. He encountered his deceased parents and nephew who had died in 1994. His mother told him it wasn't his time yet and insisted he return, despite his desire to stay. His nephew also suggested he return. The experience was characterized by overwhelming feelings of unconditional love, peace, and the certainty that death is not the end. After a slow recovery lasting over three months including initial quadriplegia and intubation, Mario eventually returned home. The experience eliminated his fear of death and strengthened his belief in God and the afterlife.
