In June 2002, Andy was a second-year US Army Infantryman who threw a party in the barracks with friends. Despite knowing his addiction to alcohol and having not eaten all day, he challenged friends to a drinking contest and consumed three large bottles of hard liquor before blacking out. Friends called an ambulance, and Andy died during transport to the hospital from severe alcohol poisoning.
During the ambulance ride, Andy hovered over his body watching three EMTs attempting to revive him, feeling confused and unaware, as if watching a movie of his death. He then found himself floating high above Earth, staring at vast oceans and land bodies. He experienced complete peace with no fear or sound, feeling part of the universe while the universe was part of him. The vision of Earth was more detailed and glorious than he could describe. Time seemed distorted - what felt like minutes was actually two days in a coma. Andy saw a flash of bright light before waking in the ICU with a breathing tube, surrounded by nurses trying to calm his panic. His Company Commander stood tearfully in the background. Doctors informed him he was only the second person in hospital history to survive such high blood/alcohol content, having died in the ambulance and again in the emergency room. He remained hospitalized for two more weeks of recovery and therapy. The experience profoundly changed Andy's life. After years of searching through various spiritual paths, he found peace through meditation. Following three combat tours, his PTSD, anxiety, and nightmares disappeared. At 39, he achieved the calm and peace he experienced during his NDE through daily meditation, viewing his experience as a second chance that gave him purpose and removed his fear of death.
