In May 1971, 11-year-old Alan was playing with three other children on a large sand pile when they decided to dig a tunnel through it. Alan was first to crawl through when the pile collapsed, crushing him and forcing the air from his lungs. Unable to breathe or move except for his legs flailing outside the sand, Alan experienced the most painful and terrifying moments of his life before losing consciousness.
As unconsciousness overtook him, Alan heard loud buzzing and sounds, then saw a light as commonly described in NDEs. He experienced a complete life review that was not like watching a movie but rather like viewing a large picture where he could see the whole while also examining details, with complete understanding and recall of his entire life. This review seemed to take only fractions of a second. Alan then found himself outside his body, standing a few feet away and above, watching his feet thrash while feeling relief from the pain and suffocation. During his out-of-body experience, Alan became aware of his mother in the house taking laundry from the dryer and can still describe what she was wearing. He also sensed his grandmother cooking a half-mile away and the workers in the fields on their 80-acre farm. A male presence stood behind him to his left - someone he knew or who knew him, making him feel safe. When his siblings dug him out and he took his first breath, Alan immediately returned to his body, feeling compressed and aware of pain again. Alan initially told his parents about the experience, but his physician father dismissed it as oxygen deprivation. Years later, after reading about NDEs in Reader's Digest, Alan realized he wasn't alone in having such experiences. The event gave him enhanced memory of early childhood and changed his perspective on death.
