During the birth of her second daughter in September 1990, Marie experienced clinical death after a nurse injected something into her IV. The heart monitor alarm immediately went off, indicating cardiac arrest. Everything turned light grey and she felt pulled backward. She experienced bright light from every direction and heard a voice say "It's not your time." A huge breath then came back into her body as she gasped and found herself conscious in the bathroom corner. She had been unconscious and unresponsive during the emergency, with nurses attending to her urgently. When she returned to consciousness, she was completely functional despite having lost bodily functions during the event. The experience gave her certainty about life after death and eliminated her fear of dying. She changed from having no religious practice to actively seeking spiritual understanding.
