After six years of custody battles and facing homelessness due to foreclosure, Kim reached her breaking point and overdosed on medication mixed with wine. Her coworker, alerted by a text she doesn't remember sending, found her unconscious on the kitchen floor. Inside, she smelled her grandmother's homemade split pea soup (grandmother was alive but had dementia) and saw her garden through the window. Her great aunt and other deceased family members were present. On the back porch, her grandfather released her from guilt about not seeing him before death, showed her his now-clean carpenter's hands, expressed pride in her as a mother, and promised coming peace and happiness. He revealed knowledge of her three children, her mistakes as learning experiences, and urged her to quit smoking. As she re-entered the house at his invitation to check on "grandma's soup," she awoke in the emergency room on her grandfather's birthday, October 10th. The experience brought complete forgiveness toward her ex-husband and certainty that struggles would end.
