Kenneth underwent a high-risk cardioversion procedure for atrial fibrillation with a 15% mortality rate. During the procedure where a wire was passed through his groin to deliver an electric shock to his heart, he experienced what felt like his body exploding in white light and his mind being forced from his body. After momentary oblivion, he found himself out of body observing medical staff pronounce him dead. He watched as his body was turned over, a rectal thermometer inserted, and the doctor unprofessionally slapped his bottom saying "Dirty boy!" after he had urinated. He observed his naked body being cleaned, shaved completely, photographed, and placed in the morgue among other corpses. In the morgue, he sensed other astral bodies of the deceased and felt a sinister, seductive presence trying to absorb him into oblivion, which he resisted. He then felt a paternal, benign presence pull him away from this dark force. Later, he regained consciousness on a morgue slab as the mortician was about to begin dissection, with tissue sample lines already drawn on his torso. A student noticed saliva dribbling from his mouth just before the first incision. Despite the mortician wanting to proceed, instruments showed a barely discernible pulse and Kenneth was resuscitated. He learned that bodies presented as dead but still alive are discovered monthly at that hospital. The experience led him to join a spiritualist/occult circle and changed his religious views from Catholicism.
