At age 15, Katie smoked strong marijuana with her boyfriend and experienced an adverse reaction, feeling faint and sick with legs turning to jelly. She collapsed while crossing the street, hitting the back of her head on the pavement and having a brief seizure lasting about two seconds. Though only unconscious for seconds, she felt she spent hours in another world. She traveled through a beautiful paradise and reached a destination where she met wise, knowledgeable beings like God or Jesus who gave her understanding of the universe. As she was pulled back, all memories of the experience were taken from her, falling away like sand through fingers despite her desperate attempts to retain them, repeatedly telling herself "You must remember where you've been." During her return, she saw blackness with a vertical beam of white light that divided into three strings of colored energy (red, white, blue), each spinning like planets that gradually transformed into the faces of people looking down at her - her boyfriend and two women who had stopped to help. One woman told her she'd had an epileptic fit. Katie felt the otherworldly experience was more real than earthly life and was amazed years later to discover others had similar experiences on NDERF, convincing her she had crossed over during her seizure.
