Kate underwent a hysterectomy that developed severe complications with paralytic iliac, causing her bowel to become paralyzed. She was transferred from a private hospital to a public hospital in critical condition and rushed to surgery. During the emergency surgery, she died on the operating table and experienced a profound out-of-body experience, floating above and watching the surgical team work on her body. She observed the surgeon throw an instrument on the floor when given the wrong one. She then traveled through a long tunnel that became increasingly bright, accompanied by incredible music, and emerged into a brilliantly lit place with flowers, trees, and a stream with a bridge made of entwined tree trunks. At the bridge, she encountered her deceased grandmother and another woman she didn't recognize - later identified by her mother as her great-grandmother who died before Kate was born, confirmed by specific physical features including brilliant blue eyes, a dark mole near her mouth, and an indent in her chin. Her grandmother told her it wasn't her time and to go back. After being resuscitated and unconscious for several days, Kate verified the surgical details with the surgeon, who confirmed she had died on the table and that he had indeed thrown the instrument. The experience eliminated her fear of death and strengthened her belief in God and the afterlife, though she still questions some Catholic Church teachings.
