On October 21, 1991, William was punched in the chest by a friend and knocked unconscious with convulsions. He instantly found himself floating through an incredibly green field toward a beach or cove with high cliffs. He realized he was not walking but floating timelessly, had no solid body though could manifest hands if desired, and felt only bliss like being wrapped in a blanket of love. At the cove, he encountered his grandfather who had died 8 years prior, along with 7-12 other beings whose faces remained hidden. His grandfather laughed and assured him all was well. When William asked about the other beings, he was told they loved him. He suspects they may have been biological relatives (he was adopted). His grandfather told him it was time to return and made him repeat a specific phrase three times with instructions to remember it upon waking. The command to return was extremely powerful. William felt profoundly at home and wanted to stay but was sent back. Upon regaining consciousness, he immediately tried to recall the phrase but neither he nor his friends who witnessed his convulsions could remember what he had been repeating. The experience convinced him that God definitely exists and that consciousness continues after death.
