During a car accident in 1975 when Trinjntje was 8 years old, she experienced a brief loss of consciousness after hitting her head on the dashboard. Her mother had been driving under the influence and crashed at an intersection. While unconscious, Trinjntje found herself in a dark, grey, hazy field with hills where she encountered two young men. She felt compelled to search for water in this otherworldly landscape. The experience had a dreamlike quality but felt very real to her. Upon regaining consciousness, she discovered that the other car in the accident contained two young male occupants - one relatively unharmed and another who spent months in a coma. This correlation between her vision and reality struck her as particularly meaningful. The experience left her with certain paranormal sensitivities, including an unusual effect on electronic equipment. Though brief, this childhood NDE during a traumatic accident provided her with an early glimpse of consciousness existing beyond the physical body, though she only came to understand its significance much later in life.
