Joel experienced a severe electrical accident in January 1970, three days after his wedding. While attempting to fix an electrical control cabinet, he was electrocuted by 380 volts passing from his left hand to right hand. The intense electrical current caused the measuring device cables to melt and stick to ground terminals, severely burning him. He was unconscious for approximately 30 minutes with fire brigade intervention required. During his unconscious state, Joel found himself in an endless tunnel with the impression of his life flashing before him. He passed by relatives and other people he knew, including his fiancée and brother, experiencing a floating sensation. The experience felt surreal as he moved through this tunnel realm. Joel eventually regained consciousness either spontaneously or through revival efforts by the firemen - he cannot recall which. He found himself on life support with monitors connected everywhere while still at the accident site. The proximity to the fire station, less than one kilometer away, likely saved his life. Though Joel describes feeling peace and floating sensations during the experience, he maintains an atheistic worldview and considers the experience not definitively real, though it seemed to be at the time.
