Tom experienced a heart attack on November 26, 2014, with doctors saying he went too long without oxygen and would have brain and heart damage. His core body temperature was lowered to 93 degrees for treatment. Standing in the hospital hallway, he saw four medical staff working on his body and said aloud "I'm dead," feeling warm peace wash over him. His deceased father appeared, saying "I'm impressed. A little John Wayne-ish, but I am impressed." The hallway wall dissolved behind his father, revealing a green valley with trees, blue mountains, and water with sunlight. His father glowed with bright, non-blinding light. His deceased mother appeared, urging them to hurry. When Tom said he wanted to stay, his father turned him toward rolling countryside with an old farm and pathway, pushing him through a gateway while saying "Tell everyone to be nice to each other." Tom felt his father was sorry to send him back and received the message to tell people to "stop worrying about their pending death because worrying takes life away." He awoke to his wife, an RN, telling him about the heart attack. In the hospital, he saw a large man with crossed hands standing at his bed's foot, making him feel safe and stopping his resistance to treatment. The experience eliminated his fear of death and increased his compassion, leading him to drive ill seniors to appointments.
