In October 1997, Tim was working under his 1979 Ford pickup truck when it rolled off the ramps and landed on his chest, preventing him from breathing. After struggling to push the crossbeam off, he found himself floating above the shop light in the garage, looking down at the truck's hood and roof. He then entered a brown-colored space where he heard a voice say, "Your kids can't lose their dog and their dad in the same week" (his dog had been killed four days earlier). The truck then rolled off his chest onto his thigh, where he remained trapped for 45 minutes before breaking free. He suffered a bruise around his entire chest and back but no other damage. The experience led Tim to explore Native American spirituality, believing the voice belonged to an Ojibwa medicine man who had died in 1992. He converted from Lutheran Protestant to Native American religion, now participating in daily prayer with spirits who make themselves known through dreams and other communications. He describes church as meaningless compared to his new spiritual practices. The experience made him more assertive, caring, and less fearful of death, believing it made him "real" to himself.
