On July 25, 2001, Ryan experienced cardiac arrest in a hospital bathroom the day after minor surgery. While on the toilet, he went into arrest and lost consciousness. When found by nurses, someone yelled "No reps, no bp" (no respirations, no blood pressure). He regained consciousness briefly while being carried to his bed, but his perspective was from the bathroom doorway - he watched five or six nurses carry his 330-pound body out of the bathroom and onto the bed while more nurses joined them. He observed specific details: the bed being adjusted with feet up and head down, his gown being torn to expose his chest, sticky pads being placed for defibrillation, phone calls to the surgeon and his wife. During this out-of-body experience, he felt an extremely cold, hurricane-force wind in the room despite being from northern Canada and knowing cold well. The medical team struggled to establish an IV due to no blood pressure, finally succeeding by inserting a needle between his fingers. When a young male nurse asked "What's his name?", Ryan re-entered his body, threw his right arm up and yelled "My name is Ryan!" The nurse said "He's back." His wife arrived minutes later and he was taken back to surgery.
