In June 1976, Thomas experienced an NDE during a dental procedure when the nitrous oxide mixture went to 100% nitrogen, depriving him of oxygen. He heard a loud buzz and felt like stretching before popping out of his body and seeing himself lying in the dentist chair, even remembering what he was wearing. He passed through the ceiling and began spinning toward a cityscape before emerging onto a large organic-looking portico. He saw a crystalline nighttime city view where each light represented one of his lifetimes. In that moment, he understood the secret of life, finding it beautifully simple and telling himself he must remember it when he returned. Two humanoid beings in white appeared, finding it humorous that he was there, and escorted him back. He awoke during CPR administration. The experience profoundly changed his perspective - he lost his previous Christian ministerial training beliefs, finding the experience had nothing to do with Jesus. He now believes everything and every action is acceptable, describing the secret of life as simple and non-threatening. He thinks about the experience daily and considers it the most meaningful event of his life, leading him to no longer fear death.
