At age three, Sydney was playing at the top of the stairs with her older brother and sister when her brother pushed her, causing her to fall down the entire staircase. She immediately left her body and floated above the stairs, watching herself cascade down like a rag doll. From this elevated perspective, she observed her brother, sister, and mother screaming while her mother caught her at the bottom of the stairs. She was confused seeing them crying over her body while she was floating above, trying to communicate but not being understood. She remembers sitting at the top step of the stairs, then sleeping, before being reintegrated into her body without understanding what happened. When she told her mother she was okay and had seen everything from above, her mother never believed her because Sydney wasn't hurt. The experience profoundly affected her life, leaving her with unusually vivid memories of early childhood that remain clear over 40 years later. She mentions a second NDE during her fourth pregnancy involving resuscitation but has difficulty discussing it. The childhood experience created lasting effects including periods of self-confinement that worried her parents.
