Steven was involved in a racing accident in 1986 when a car came down on him in turn four, causing his car to flip and land on its roof. The impact and subsequent fire led to severe oxygen deprivation that should have been fatal according to medical staff. During the accident, Steven experienced an out-of-body experience where he floated above his car, observing the rescue efforts from a position about ten feet in the air near the garage light. He could see both viewpoints simultaneously - one from inside the car and another from floating above. He watched rescue members struggle to extinguish the fire and extract him from the vehicle, with one crew member ripping the hood open with bare hands. Despite being told his oxygen levels were so low he should not be alive, Steven survived without permanent damage. Upon awakening in the ambulance, he saw lights getting progressively brighter and wondered if he was going to heaven. He felt complete peace during the experience with no pain or worries, knowing he was in God's hands. The experience profoundly affected his spiritual life, though he later struggled with depression and suicide attempts before finding peace with God.
