At age 14, Jeffrey was struck by a teenage drunk driver going 55 mph in a parking lot, throwing him 45 feet through the air. He experienced immediate darkness that gradually lightened to gray as he floated upward through the grayness. He emerged onto a flat plain with misty ground and saw a massive gray stone wall stretching to infinity with a doorway nearby. Whitish, pearlescent tendrils of light flowed from the doorway like sea anemone arms, filling him with overwhelming feelings of relief, love, acceptance and coming home. As he approached the light, the emotions intensified. Before crossing the threshold, everything went black. A Vietnam War medic photographer witnessed him say "Are you going to bury me?" while clinically dead with no heartbeat or pupil response for at least 8 minutes. His injuries included fractured skull, brain damage, broken bones, torn ligaments, and organ damage. He was comatose for hours and doctors predicted paralysis and mental diminishment. He made a remarkable recovery over 7 weeks in hospital and months of therapy, regaining full function despite the severe injuries.
