Jeff was shot eight times including one bullet to his left carotid artery during a criminal attack. While being attended to by two neighbors with medical backgrounds, he went into shock and began experiencing an overwhelming calmness completely out of character given he had just physically assaulted his attacker. As the peaceful feeling progressed, he saw his father who had died 30 years earlier along with another unidentified person. He was elated to see his father but remembered his 11-year-old daughter was in the house during the shooting. He began praying as loudly as possible, asking Jesus to let him live for his daughter's sake. One neighbor who had worked in Memphis Trauma Unit stated she believed he was gone and could not hear his prayer. After asking Jesus to spare him, all the pain immediately returned and his father disappeared. He got back on his feet and remained standing until EMTs arrived. The experience confirmed his Christian faith and eliminated his fear of death. Within years after the NDE, his writing abilities changed dramatically, going from struggling with any document to writing AP press releases and articles for The Sporting News.
