On July 4, 1973, Steven and his military buddies were celebrating the holiday at the lake and beach area on Fort Hood. Despite not being a strong swimmer and expressing concern about weeds in the water, Steven joined his friends swimming toward a floating platform about 100 yards from shore. He quickly tired and turned back but unknowingly swam into a weed field. The weeds seemed to tighten their grip around his limbs as he panicked and fought against them. He went under water multiple times, screaming for help each time he surfaced. His friend was only 20 feet away when Steven went down for the third time.
As Steven went under for the final time, a peaceful consciousness came over him. Looking up from underwater, he cried out to God to save him. At that moment, a very bright light appeared before him, revealing what appeared to be a long tunnel with the light at its end. As he floated through this tunnel toward the bright golden-yellow light, an individual appeared at the end whom he couldn't clearly identify. This being pointed toward the opposite end of the tunnel from where Steven had entered, conveying that it wasn't his time yet and he needed to go back. Steven believes this figure may have been Jesus or possibly an Archangel. Immediately after this encounter, Steven found himself observing the scene from several hundred feet above the ground. He could see his friends carrying his lifeless body and laying him face down on a picnic table. At the precise moment they stepped back, he felt himself re-entering his body and began throwing up water. His friends were amazed he was alive, as they were about to call base police and an ambulance, believing him to be dead. Steven never went to the hospital after the incident and has only shared his experience with a handful of people. The experience included his past flashing before his eyes frame by frame just as the light appeared. He emerged with a deep faith in God and Jesus Christ, no longer fearing death, and maintaining a close personal relationship with God.
