Stephanie experienced two separate near-death experiences, both triggered by severe asthma attacks that completely blocked her airways. During the first episode on March 1, 2004, she had an asthma attack worse than ever before with absolutely no air going in. While being driven to the hospital, she knew she was dying. Halfway to the emergency room, something took over her body - she rolled down the window and screamed "somebody help me" at the top of her lungs, despite being unable to talk or breathe. She was shaking her head in disbelief because she knew she hadn't yelled it herself. Everything went white, and she next found herself in the intensive care unit.
The second experience involved similar life-threatening asthma, where she saw her fingers and toes turning blue from lack of oxygen. She lost consciousness but maintained awareness, seeing everything in bright white light. She found herself above her body, observing herself being wheeled out to the ambulance. She could see herself lying motionless on the gurney. Despite this, she felt calm and at peace with not coming back, experiencing complete relaxation and the sense that everything would be fine because nothing else mattered anymore. Her awareness during this state was remarkably clear and detailed. According to her boyfriend, she was in the ambulance for about 25 minutes before they drove away, during which time she may have been intubated. When she came around in the ambulance, she was again screaming at the top of her lungs, wondering who was doing the screaming, as something else seemed to have taken over her body in both cases. Notably, during the out-of-body experience, she observed the EMTs having trouble getting her to the ambulance because they were stuck in the lilac bush - a detail that was later confirmed to have actually happened. These experiences removed all doubt about the afterlife for Stephanie. She now knows she has something to finish in this life before being allowed to die, feeling more spiritually connected than ever before despite not being particularly religious.
