On October 18, 2006, Stéphanie underwent what should have been a simple endoscopy to check on a stomach ulcer. Under general anesthesia, a catastrophic complication occurred - the procedure caused an internal perforation leading to massive hemorrhaging. In the recovery room, she awoke with unbearable pain and an intense burning sensation throughout her body. Despite initially being told she was just reacting badly to anesthesia, her condition rapidly deteriorated. She began vomiting blood profusely, triggering panic among the medical staff. Over the next two hours, she experienced three cardiac arrests - two spontaneous and one on the operating table that required defibrillation to restart her heart.
During these critical moments, Stéphanie experienced both an internal and external perspective simultaneously. From above, she watched the scene unfold like a movie - seeing herself curled up on the stretcher while nurses held her arms and head as blood poured from her mouth onto the floor. She observed the medical staff's panic, heard the alarm being triggered, and watched the doctor arrive. The doctor stretched her out, held her hand, appeared terribly sorry, and told her not to worry about the perforation, that he would take care of her and they would put her back to sleep. She saw all this while floating above, knowing with certainty that she was dying. Internally, she experienced an extraordinary transition. The unbearable physical pain began to dissipate as she rose above her suffering body. The room transformed, lighting up with an incredibly white but non-blinding light. She felt absolute peace, total well-being, and happiness beyond description. She thought of her boys without seeing their images, saying goodbye to them as "angels" without any sorrow or fear, knowing she would still be with them in a different way. Everything became white, peaceful, painless - just pure happiness and absolute well-being that cannot be adequately expressed in words. Stéphanie eventually returned to her body and awoke in intensive care. The experience left her without fear of death, knowing that those who pass are simply elsewhere but fine - better than in life. She gained certainty about the afterlife and occasionally sees white, fuzzy entities she considers guardian angels watching over her.
