Spencer experienced a near-death experience on October 18, 2006, during a suicide attempt. He had slit a major artery in his wrist and was losing blood rapidly. Within 5 to 10 minutes, his breathing began to slow as his life ebbed away. The severity of the blood loss created a life-threatening medical emergency requiring immediate intervention.
As Spencer began to lose consciousness, he felt the warmth of something infinite reaching out to absorb him. He entered a deep state of unconsciousness but then found himself levitating over the landscape visible from the ambulance. The trees were moving, and the sky appeared resplendent and beautiful. During this out-of-body state, he heard a gentle yet stern voice tell him, "It's not your time." He vaguely remembers letting go of someone's hand during this otherworldly encounter. When Spencer suddenly awoke in the ambulance, he witnessed a policeman crying and saying, "He was just too young, so young." Spencer immediately asked the officer not to cry for him, and the officer responded, "Alright Spencer I won't cry." Upon entering the emergency room, Spencer saw lights everywhere that he later discovered were not actually present - these were non-physical lights visible only to him. The experience was characterized by numinous understanding, pure indivisible peace, unity of spirit, security, and white light that drew him in with overflowing warmth and comfort. The experience profoundly impacted Spencer's understanding of reality, teaching him that there is a reality beyond our mortal state, that our finite condition cannot fully understand that infinite reality, and that life is precious and should not be gambled with.
