In October 2005, Erica was deeply depressed following her cousin's suicide and stepfather's death from Lou Gehrig's disease. During an argument with her boyfriend, she attempted suicide by overdosing on sixty psychiatric medications and threatening herself with a knife. After being taken to a research hospital by ambulance, she became aggressive when staff tried to restrain her. Unable to breathe while held flat, she coded in the emergency room when a pill became lodged in her tracheal tube during intubation attempts. During her clinical death, she experienced an out-of-body perspective, observing medical staff working to intubate her. She then traveled through a tunnel toward an increasingly bright light, entering what she perceived as God's throne room. There she saw Jesus Christ seated beside God in a pure white space. Jesus appeared in a white robe with a purple sash that later turned red, wearing a jeweled crown. She observed flames in his eyes and felt overwhelming love and forgiveness. Though she bowed before them and they spoke to her, she cannot recall their words. She awakened intubated, with a pill still lodged in her left lung. Upon writing on an erasable board, she first asked what happened - learning she had coded and nearly required a tracheotomy - then wrote that Jesus was beautiful and had spoken to her. The experience transformed her from being suicidal and fearful to knowing God forgave her and believing she was sent back to serve Him.
