On March 12, 2012, Doug fell and broke his C-7 vertebra, losing consciousness for approximately 5 minutes. He awakened beside a tree overlooking the most beautiful pristine lake he had ever seen, with vivid colors, lily pads, bulrushes, and a heron. The setting had profound peace and tranquility. He encountered his uncle who had died years earlier, appearing young (about 25) in a Brooklyn Dodgers or Yankees #5 uniform. Two other unidentified people watched from nearby. Doug conversed with his uncle about life for what felt like hours. When he heard his niece calling his name from far away, his uncle told him it wasn't his time and he had to go back, ending with "Play it again, Dougie" - his characteristic phrase. Doug was pushed back hard, awakening to his niece who reported his eyes had rolled back and he had convulsions. Later verification with his mother confirmed exact details about his uncle's baseball uniform that Doug had never known. The experience left him with occasional out-of-body episodes where he observes conversations from above.
