During winter 1955/56, Diane was on the front of a toboggan sled with her father when they hit a tree, unable to steer away on the icy hill. She sustained a skull fracture, broken tooth and nose, with significant trauma. Upon blacking out, she was immediately bathed in white light, experiencing profound joy and bliss. She saw a tunnel and heard voices telling her it was okay to go toward it. From her out-of-body perspective, she could see her distraught father trying to wake her and knew her mother was screaming and running down the hill. She felt torn between the bliss of the light and knowing what her death would do to her parents. The compassion for her parents won out and she chose to return. She awoke as her father carried her up the hill, later requiring surgery to insert a metal plate. The experience left her with lasting psychic abilities and reduced fear, though she blocked many memories for years due to family disapproval of psychic phenomena.
