On February 22, 2011, Reverend Dr. Robert Joy suffered a massive heart attack after shoveling snow. His wife drove him to the hospital where the doctor noted he was having "a really good heart attack" before he blacked out during cardiac arrest. Medical staff attempted resuscitation for 40 minutes with 15-20 defibrillator shocks, far exceeding normal protocol. They were preparing to call time of death when one final attempt succeeded. He was then helicoptered to another hospital, arresting two more times during flight, and received a stent in his left anterior descending artery.
After brief darkness and passing through a dark void, Robert found himself in a grass-covered field watching dogs playing - dogs he believed were ones he had owned throughout his life. Despite being a minister who doesn't doctrinally believe "all dogs go to heaven," there they were. The scene then shifted to an intensely bright environment with a vertical column of pure white energy that was sparking and sparkling, much brighter than any sun. He floated to within six inches of this pillar of what he took to be God's pure divine presence. Though neither hot nor cold, he sensed touching it would "NOT BE GOOD." He felt total peace and assurance that God would take care of everything, his family, and himself. A low rumbling sound like the lowest organ note permeated everything - a holy, awesome, and awe-inspiring sound. Realizing he must be dead or dying, he prayed desperately: "Please send me back! Can I go back? If there is any way, please send me back!" Robert felt the defibrillator paddles shocking him back to consciousness, seeing the doctor's amazed expression that they had worked after 40 minutes. Despite predictions of severe organ and brain damage requiring nursing home care, he recovered completely except for reduced heart function (EF 35-40%). The experience eliminated his fear of death entirely. He continues to experience heightened light sensitivity, especially with sunlight on snow. As a minister, the experience confirmed his faith absolutely while giving him firsthand knowledge that "God is light and in him is no darkness at all" - a truth he has preached about since.
