Richard was admitted to hospital with acute abdominal pain in August 2002. During an emergency laparotomy (stomach inspection), surgeons found nothing wrong in the stomach area - he had a pneumonic virus. During surgery, his lungs collapsed and heart stopped. The medical team struggled but successfully resuscitated him, and he spent two weeks on full life support in a drug-induced coma.
During his clinical death, Richard experienced a vivid vision of a Native American village with incredibly green grass and blue skies. The village chief gave him and his wife crystals to keep. In the vision, they lived their lives, grew old, and his wife died first. They were instructed to return the crystals to the village before or after dying. Near death himself, Richard returned to the village where the elder gave him a new crystal and led him to a cave filled with beautiful wind chime sounds and clear water flowing over returned crystals. Upon placing his crystals with the others, he felt at one with every crystal and the presence of thousands of others in total harmony. A brilliant yellow warming light opened in the cave. Walking into it, he felt his life ending with total peace. The light filled him with the energy of thousands of lives stored in the crystals. He then felt fired out of the light at near light speed, experiencing loneliness at leaving the light. With a bang, he knew he was back, though it was two weeks before he actually woke from the coma.
