On March 20, 2003, approximately one hour after giving birth to her second child, Conni J lost consciousness when her blood pressure fell dangerously low. Her brief experience began with finding herself in a dark space with expanded peripheral vision. The space was intensely quiet, peaceful, and completely void of color. She sensed and somewhat saw beings surrounding her, as if positioned in the center of an immeasurable yet intimate circle. The beings were silently and intently observing her situation without drama, just quiet presence. She felt extremely content in this space before the experience abruptly ended. She awoke to a nurse holding smelling salts under her nose, which she smacked away, thinking "Just leave me alone! I am happy in this place! I want to go back!" The farthest thing from her mind was her newborn daughter. She felt disturbed by the interruption, completely safe, unshaken, and fearless despite having always been terrified of death previously. She was extremely weak, unable to stand, and was carried to bed wrapped in heated blankets while shaking uncontrollably. Through this physical distress, she maintained feelings of complete safety and lack of fear. She was given oxygen, IV fluids, and warm blankets, eventually recovering. The experience transformed her deep-rooted, sometimes crippling fear of death. She became more open-minded about the afterlife, gained awareness of something beyond the physical world, and developed greater compassion and tolerance for others. She didn't share the experience for many years, and when she did, people either remained quiet or seemed disturbed by it.
