In July 1983, Cindy J experienced respiratory arrest due to a massive asthma attack, possibly triggered by chemical exposure. After extreme fear and losing consciousness, she faded to black before being jolted awake and moving rapidly down a tunnel toward white light, accompanied by loud noise. As she passed through a membrane into the white light, she felt herself disintegrate into atoms and become one with the light, experiencing overwhelming love, joy, happiness, and union with everything. She then found herself standing still in an orb of white light containing about 15 beings of light. Though not physical, she recognized them clearly and could communicate telepathically. Her maternal grandmother was at the front, her paternal grandfather was present, along with other deceased relatives including her godfather and a coworker's son who had recently died at 22. A large male presence in the left corner identified himself as Aboriginal guardian or great-grandfather watching over her. After some time, her grandmother told her she had to return to earth, saying she would put Cindy "in the oven till fully baked." Despite begging to stay, Cindy jolted awake in the hospital. She lost consciousness intermittently for about a week, each time upset to return to this "horrible, gritty world where everybody looked like rotting fruit." This repulsion eventually wore off. The experience transformed her from agnostic to spiritually open, eliminating her fear of death. She thinks about the experience daily and worked in Aboriginal Land Rights her entire life after an Aboriginal hospital cleaner was the first person she saw upon awakening.
