Rachel, age 12, drowned at a YMCA pool while playing with her brother over a boogie board. When her brother began drowning, she made the conscious choice to let him use her as a flotation device to save his life, knowing it would likely cost her own. She remained underwater for several minutes while the lifeguard was briefly absent. During this time, she experienced floating above the pool, seeing everyone from above including the lifeguard returning. She then became one with the entire universe, experiencing herself as time and space itself, understanding everything simultaneously. She felt she was everything and everywhere at once, no longer confined to a body. She had a dialogue with herself/the universe about whether to return to her body, being told to wait for the right moment. She experienced profound understanding of existence, the meaning of life, and the nature of consciousness. Upon being resuscitated, she returned to her body feeling the weight and limitations of physical form. The experience transformed her from a self-centered child to someone with deep spiritual understanding, leading to a life of prayer, purpose, and belief in God.
