In the summer of 1960, Richard was learning to water ski when a boat accident occurred. After being whipped across the water at high speed, he lost his grip and tumbled violently, plunging feet-first into the lake. The life belt was driven up to his armpits, knocking the wind out of him. After fighting to reach the surface twice and inhaling water, he sank beneath the waves a third time and everything changed.
A warm golden glow enveloped him as the boat sounds transformed into beautiful music, like a thousand choirs and orchestras performing. He stopped fighting and began a pleasant descent, with a golden mist surrounding him as his life flashed before his eyes like a movie. He then traveled through a golden tunnel toward shadowy figures he felt were deceased relatives. The experience was characterized by overwhelming peace and love. Richard was told it was not his time and he must return. Despite his protests and desire to stay, he was forcibly pulled back. A spotter who rescued him reported finding him 15-20 feet underwater and dropping fast. The spotter said Richard had fought the rescue attempt, which corresponded to when he was having his profound experience. The bouncing of the boat as they raced to shore provided inadvertent CPR that expelled water from his lungs.
