On Christmas Eve 2004, Brian was vacuuming when he suffered a massive heart attack. He was resuscitated four times and clinically dead for 12 minutes total. As paramedics worked on him, he heard loud hissing that became like a waterfall, then with a "pop" found himself in a vast black expanse that didn't feel like a tunnel but was completely open. He moved toward a soft golden light like a cloud at sunset.
During the experience, Brian felt complete peace with no panic, just calm wonder. He knew he was dead and had no body, realizing he wasn't breathing but didn't care. He wondered about the physics of his experience - how he could see without eyes, how fast he was moving without reference points. He felt himself moving toward the golden cloud with curiosity about what would happen next. His core thought was "I guess I get to find out what happens now." Brian remembers reaching the cloud but has no memory of what happened after, only feelings and a sense of knowing something he's not allowed to remember. He woke up 12 hours later in intensive care. His life fundamentally changed - he went from making $70,000 a year with material success to teaching in a Southeast Asian orphanage for no pay, living off savings. His doctor calls him "Lazarus" because he shouldn't have survived. He now experiences prophetic dreams and unusual connections with animals.
