Four-year-old Bonnie was at the river with family when she was dared to go past a red warning line at the boat launch. She was immediately swept into the current, bobbing and unable to call for help as water filled her throat. After multiple attempts to surface, she grew tired and calm, noticing a large fish brush her calf as she floated underwater with eyes open.
A warm sensation began building as light filled the river, her body, and thoughts. Reality filtered away and she became one with an all-encompassing energy of indescribable love and connection. She lost individual awareness, merging with everything that existed. The warmth then focused around and beneath her, coalescing to cradle the self she became again. Without words or images, there was communication - a cherishing comfort followed by what she describes as bereavement, knowing she made a choice to return for a purpose that still eludes her. Bonnie was pulled unconscious from the water after an estimated 10 minutes, not breathing. A rescuer performed CPR and drove her to the hospital where she recovered within hours. She never learned the identity of her rescuer. The experience left her with a core connection to that other realm and heightened empathy, though returning to physical existence felt like ashes compared to the unity she experienced. She reports difficulty with relationships and strong emotions due to the persistent sense of connection from her NDE.
